Super Moon or Perigee-Syzygy Moon
Last time the moon was this close to the earth I was 37 and Joe 39--March 8, 1993. I'm trying to remember if we took time to see it. We made sure we made time Saturday night. If it doesn't happen for another 20 years, my eyes may be too old to see it clearly. We both hoped Conor and Meghan saw it from the shores of Belize and Jerren and Pat watched it from a beach in Panama City. It was gorgeous!
The moon travels an elliptical path around the Earth, and its closest point (perigee) is about 30,000 miles nearer than it's farthest point (apogee.) The perigee and apogee occur monthly, but what made Saturday extraordinary was the full moon rising and its perigee passage around Earth occurred within an hour of each other.

In Spring of 2010 I snapped this pic of Mama Owl and her neighbor, Mama Woodpecker sitting on their nests within the palm tree. |
